Is Veterinary Compounding Legal, You Ask?

January 28th 2012 -

Is veterinary compounding legal, you ask? In most cases, animal drug compound, or veterinary compounding, is legal only in very specific circumstances as described in Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. According to the FDA, legal compounding is not the making of a drug from bulk or raw active ingredients. With that said, compounding should not be used in order to circumvent the drug approval process or to sell a specific drug at a cost below what is approved by the FDA. As a consumer and an animal health practitioner, though, you should be aware that products are being promoted to veterinarians under the guise of compounding that do not basically fit within the narrow legal definition, which generally presents a threat to the health of your pet or animal. In any case, you have to seek professional veterinarian advice from your pets doctor and ask the right kind of treatment for your pet along with any alternative methods.
