Recently, estrogen replacement therapy has been on the upswing, with studies showing that adding progesterone on top of estrogen for at least ten days each month lessens the increase in uterine cancer risk. However, the addition of progesterone to estrogen treatment has serious drawbacks. It increases the rate of heart disease by decreasing high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, and it substantially increases the risk of breast cancer.
